Understanding SKCK (Police Clearance Certificate) in Indonesia and How Foreigners Can Obtain It

What is SKCK?

A Surat Keterangan Catatan Kepolisian (SKCK), or Police Clearance Certificate, is an official document issued by the Indonesian National Police (POLRI). It serves as a record of an individual’s criminal history (or lack thereof). SKCK is often required for various administrative purposes, such as job applications, visa processing, business licensing, or studying abroad.

For foreigners, obtaining an SKCK is usually necessary when applying for a stay permit (KITAS/KITAP), renewing visas, or fulfilling other legal requirements in Indonesia.

Who Can Apply for an SKCK?

  1. Indonesian Citizens: They need it for personal, professional, or legal purposes.

  2. Foreign Nationals: Typically required for residency, work, or business-related matters.

Requirements for Foreigners

Foreign nationals must prepare the following documents to apply for an SKCK:

  1. Letter of Recommendation from Immigration

    • A letter issued by the local immigration office where the foreigner resides.

  2. Copy of Passport

    • The personal data page and pages showing relevant visa information.

  3. Copy of KITAS/KITAP

    • The stay permit card indicating residency in Indonesia.

  4. Copy of Police Report (STM)

    • The Surat Tanda Melapor obtained from the local police when the foreigner first arrived in Indonesia.

  5. Photographs

    • Prepare six 4x6 cm photos with a yellow background.

  6. Completed SKCK Application Form

    • Available at the police office or online (if applying via the official POLRI website).

How to Apply for SKCK as a Foreigner

  1. Prepare All Required Documents

  2. Visit the Designated Police Office

  3. Complete the Application Form

Fill out the form with accurate personal details. Include your reasons for requiring the SKCK and details about your residence and activities in Indonesia.

  4. Submit Fingerprints

Foreign applicants are required to provide fingerprints as part of the criminal record check. This is typically done at the police office.

  5. Pay the Administrative Fee

  6. Wait for Processing

The processing time can vary depending on the workload at the National Police Headquarters. On average, it takes between 3 to 7 working days.

Tips for a Smooth SKCK Application

  • Check Your Documents: Ensure all documents are valid and copies are clear.

  • Be Prompt: Visit the police office early to avoid long queues.

  • Understand Local Rules: Procedures might differ slightly depending on the region.

  • Consider Using an Agent: If language or administrative processes are challenging, hiring an agent familiar with Indonesian procedures can be helpful. IndofastPermit ready to assist you!

Validity and Renewal

An SKCK is valid for up to 1 year. If you require it beyond this period, you must renew it by submitting a fresh application with updated documents
